BRUCE MAY ROCK and the genocide of 1967 wasn’t funny as the young nation Biafra was fought against by the powers of her mother country who had international backing and snuffed off the lives of more than five million Biafrans in the civil war that lasted for thirty months.

While these whole things were going on a young man called Bruce Mayrock drew the attention of the world to the abomination going on in the Eastern part of the country Nigeria.

Bruce Mayrock was born in the year 1949 and was twenty years as of 1969 when he committed suicide by setting himself Ablaze to draw the attention of the world to the killings of the people of Biafra.

Barr Chudi Ofodile in his book titled The politics of Biafra: and future of Nigeria published in 2016 cited Mayrock as one of t Biafra’s non-Igbo actors. Those who participated in one way or the other to fight the cause of the ill-fated Republic of Biafra were those who were not of Igbo Origin.

Bruce Mayrock wasn’t an African yet he identified with the Igbos, he was a twenty years old citizen of the United States of America. An undergraduate at Columbian University, he felt his actions would serve the purpose of drawing his country and the whole world to the gross injustice happening in the Eastern part of Nigeria and probably bring to halt the carnage.

He was spurned by love for humanity and hatred against the injustice unleashed on the young Biafran nation. Injustice against the shells being dropped through air raids on the civilian population in the Biafran enclave comprising mainly defenseless women and children all of them wallowing in the sorry and deplorable condition of all manners of afflictions, especially starvation and diseases.

On May 30^th, 1969 that day being a Friday, he had appeared in front of the United Nations Building in New York where world leaders had gathered for a summit. Within moments in the full glare of hundreds of onlookers, Bruce set himself ablaze and died later the same day.

The placards he left behind after his death had inscriptions calling the attention of the world to the genocide in Biafra and it read:

“You must stop the genocide-please the 9 million Biafrans”

His protest against the conscienceless deceit and conspiracy against the millions of children dying of starvation and of women being raped and murdered or even starved to death was peculiar.

He was from Westbury New York and had eluded the United Nation’s security guard who ran after him with fire extinguishers. He ran with the burning fire and fell at the bronze statue sculpted by Evgeniy Vuchetich to represent the human wish to end all wars, which bears the slogan.
