WHY YOU SHOULD USE “AVAILABLE ON DEMAND” ON YOUR CV, INSTEAD OF A FULL LIST OF YOUR REFERRALS
Usually, when I round up a client’s Cv with the phrase “Available on demand” in place of a long list of referrals contact, they ask me “WHY”
Sometimes I tell them it is plain professional, at other times, I say it is the standard practice now.
However, there are tons of tangible reasons WHY you should use this phrase, instead of the full names and contact of your referrals, at the reference section of your Cv
- PRIVACY/SECURITY CONCERNS
This is probably the most obvious reason. As a job seeker, your Cv will pass through several hands as you search for a dream job. This is especially so if you put out your applications on online job portals.
There are many scammers out there, and such sensitive data can be used for identity theft. Even yours isn’t safe you know.
Simply replacing the names and contact of your referrals with the phrase “Available on demand” will save you some embarrassment
- IT KEEPS YOUR OPTIONS OPEN
Referees are people who can guarantee a potential employer that you indeed possess the personality traits, skills, qualifications and experience you say you have.
It might be a former boss, or even your pastor.
However, if for any reason you decide to change your mind about whose opinion should matter in deciding your fate in the recruitment process, you can flexibly do that, something that may not be possible if you already have names written out.
- HELPS YOU FOCUS ON WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT
Your Cv has to be as concise as possible, with only the relevant information that should determine whether you win the job or not.
Truth is, a Cv gets read for only an average of 6 seconds, except the HR has time to sit through it. So, writing out a list of references may not catch the attention of the HR.
So, better to use that limited space to bare it all on your skills, qualifications, leadership roles, and all what’s important.
I wish you all the best
